Having been founded in 1974, Health Sciences University of Hokkaido celebrates its 50th anniversary in 2024.
Following its initial establishment of the School of Pharmaceutical Sciences, the University has since established the School of Dentistry, the School of Nursing & Social Services, the School of Psychological Sciences, the School of Rehabilitation Sciences, and the School of Medical Technology in response to emerging social needs. Fifty years after its founding, the university has become one of Hokkaido’s leading universities in the health sciences, with six Schools, nine Departments, six Graduate Schools, and a Dental Hygiene School attached to the School of Dentistry.
To date, the university has produced more than 24,000 graduates. Our graduates are highly regarded for their achievements in diverse fields, both in Japan and abroad. We, the faculty and staff, take true pride in them, and we recognize the steadfast efforts and achievements of our predecessors over the past 50 years.
Situated on the vast Ishikari Plain, the Tobetsu Campus is directly connected to the local JR station and provides a rich natural environment in which students can enjoy a leisurely student life. The Sapporo Ainosato Campus, where the School of Medical Technology is located, is also home to the HSUH Hospital. The university also has plans to construct a new campus in F Village in Kitahiroshima City in 2028. The entire faculty and staff are committed to supporting students to ensure they will enjoy their studies and alumni activities at the new campus as much as they have enjoyed the fulfilling learning environment at the Tobetsu Campus and Sapporo Ainosato Campus.
The university's founding educational ideal is "perfection of the whole person as a health professional through knowledge, virtue, and physical well-being". Those responsible for human care are expected not only to have solid knowledge and skills, but also to make efforts to maintain their own personal well-being. Furthermore, we recognize that there are limits to what a single professional can do to provide high quality care, and that the ability to demonstrate one’s expertise as part of a team to support both patients and their families is essential. In addition to multidisciplinary cooperative education focused on nurturing such capabilities, our strength as a medical university is our ability to facilitate interaction on a daily basis across faculties and departments among alumni aiming to become professionals in a variety of fields. Moreover, in order to adapt to the rapid spread of AI, we are incorporating data science-related courses in accordance with our DX Implementation Plan.
Looking to the future, we aim to cultivate human resources with highly specialized knowledge and skills, capable of rising to the challenge of problem-solving through flexible thinking, and thus serving their local communities.
